How to Make a Plastic Bottle Mosquito Trap
Four Parts:1.Cutting the bottle
2.Charging the bottle with chemicals
3.Assembling the bottle
4.Replacing the chemicals
This article will tell you how to make a mosquito trap out of a plastic bottle. The ingredients will charge one trap for 10-14 days. You may want to place multiple traps around your house or property.
Ingredients:
200 milliliters of water
50 grams of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
Part 1 of 4: Cutting the bottle
- Put 200 ml of water into the bottle.
- 2Measure from the water line to the top of the bottle.
3.
Divide your measurement by two and subtract 3 cm (1").
4.
Measure from the top of the bottle down this distance and make a mark.
5.Do this at three or four spots around the bottle, then complete the circle. This will be your guide line for the cut.
6.Cut carefully along the guide line until the bottle is in two sections.
7.
Retain both parts of the bottle.
Part 2 of 4: Charging the bottle with chemicals
1.Mix 50 grams of brown sugar with 200 milliliters of hot water. Allow the mixture to cool.
2.Pour the mixture in to the lower half of the plastic bottle.
3
Add 1 gram of yeast, but do not mix. This will produce carbon dioxide
Part 3 of 4: Assembling the bottle
1.Invert the top of the plastic bottle and place it inside the bottom part of the bottle. It will be upside down. 2.Push the top inside gently until the cut edges match. At this point, the top of the bottle should be well above the water line. If not, empty a bit of the solution so that the adult mosquito will be able to fly in and not drown in the liquid. 3.Secure the cut edges with three or four pieces of clear tape.
Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2 (Carbon dioxide) released by animals while breathing. The Yeast will make CO2 and fool the insects. As they fly in, their behavior becomes weakness: All mosquitoes are known to fly near the corners of a closed area, so they keep flying in the sections Above the Part where the bottle is open, and Die slowly because of suffocation or because of inability to get food.
Part 4 of 4: Replacing the chemicals
1
Disassemble the bottle after 10-14 days.2.Wash the bottle halves.3.Fill with fresh chemicals and reassemble the trap.
Tips
- Use a lighter to gently melt the cut edges for a more finished look and less dangerous edges.
- Place the bottle near windows or where there is good circulation of fresh air.
